This course focuses on the transition from authoritarian rule and the process of democratic consolidation or breakdown, drawing on experiences in several selected countries from Latin America, Europe and Asia. It will examine the concepts, theories and empirical findings pertaining to the study of democratization and their applicability to the study of the same issue in Chinese societies.
