Anniversary Message by Department Head

Carlos Lo p

On behalf of the GPA Department, I am very excited to announce the launch of this webpage for celebrating the GPA 50th Anniversary. First established in 1970, the GPA Department has started with a small team of teaching staff administering a humble undergraduate programme to graduate the first batch of 10 major students in 1974. After five decades of successive remarkable efforts from our predecessors, the GPA Department has grown from strength to strength into a highly institutionalized and well-known academic department, currently with 15 Teaching Staff, a Postgraduate research programme, two taught Master programmes, and an Undergraduate programme, with more than 140 students graduating every year at different degree levels. Widely known for their intellectual training in critical thinking, our talented graduates have spread their careers across the political arena, the public sector, the commercial industry, and the academic community with both impactful achievements and significant contributions. Most significantly, the GPA Department has acquired its international academic reputation in terms of research, teaching and societal impact.

Today, with GPA’s 50th Anniversary, it is apt for us to review the Department’s historic path of development to cherish every successful story and savor every outstanding achievement. In particular, we would like to take this milestone occasion to pay tribute to our most revered first generation of teachers, under the great leadership of Prof. S.S. Hsieh, the inaugural Head of the GPA Department, for committing their whole life to build GPA from scratch into an internationally highly competitive force in political science alongside public administration research and education. Their scholarly legacies and indefatigable spirit will live forever with us as the major source of academic inspiration to sustain our pursuit of international excellence.

As a GPA graduate, I am proud to see the growing impact of our extensive alumni network. A massive thanks and shout out go to the GPA Alumni Association’s active effort to connect all alumni together and keep them in close contact with the GPA Department. The strong sentiment of GPA affiliation amongst our graduates owes much to the fine tradition of a close and interactive teacher-student relationship, which is deeply embedded in the overall teaching and learning process. It is our aspiration to make use of this webpage as a connecting platform for all our alumni to reminisce about their memorable school days and share their special memories.

Let’s be proud of being a member of the GPA family and join our GPA 50th Anniversary with jubilation!
